Recent studies into the professional needs of evaluators indicate that they are seeking intermediate-level development opportunities. These studies also show that they prefer a hands-on contributory approach that harnesses the collective knowledge of participants to formal lecture teaching that focuses on a single expert. This workshop will build on these observations to offer a totally new training event. Four experienced evaluation experts will host an emergent-content session where participants will first be called upon to identify the evaluation-related issues they would like to investigate. The organizers will regroup participants' concerns into logical packages. Each organizer will then lead the discussion for one package, with up to four discussions taking place concurrently. One person (an organizer or a participant) will be tasked with synthesizing each discussion and to present the synthesis in a plenary for the benefit of all participants. More than one such iteration could take place as time permits. The aim is to respond to intermediate to advanced learning needs in a format that encourages dialogue and exchange. We will conclude the workshop with a discussion of the format itself and how it can be improved.
