Using theories and frameworks of evaluation practice to inform and improve our work (01) [EN]

Christina Christie, University of California

2 mai 2010, 9 h 00 - 16 h 00 - Intermediate - 25 places

This workshop will provide for dialogues on how various evaluation theories and frameworks for practice relate, known as The Evaluation Theory Tree. Our view is that there are three basic elements in considering evaluation theories and frameworks: use, methods, valuing. All practitioners are concerned with the methods employed when conducting an evaluation, and recognize that evaluation is an enterprise that involves valuing (distinguishing it from most research). It is also recognized that evaluations will be used in ways that impact programs. We suggest, however, that the particular emphasis placed on one or another of these dimensions, which we refer to as the "branches" of the Evaluation Theory Tree, can differ.

This interactive workshop will provide participants with a basic understanding of:

  • A system for categorizing and comparing evaluation theories;
  • Prevalent evaluation theories for practice included in the categorization; and,
  • The ways in which evaluation frameworks can inform, guide, and be used in practice.
